Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was managed by her mom, grandmother and godparents. As a young child, Ford battled anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she would not be a good for the school. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth application she was eventually accepted. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford didn't graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Alongside her usual stage work, Tate was a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her repertoire in 1996, soon gained her attention.
